Why do we need intellectual property protection?

We assume that we are living in a free and open society, but in the real world the concept that everyone is entitled to all the thoughts and ideas that are in the world, does not work. Why not?

First reason – moral value.

Monetary indemnity is due to work and also due to the products of the thought.

Second reason – encouragement.

Knowing that intellectual property is protected encourages creation. The protection of intellectual property encourages the publication of the creations, and encourages the individuals in the society to create more. Every creator, whether an entrepreneur, artist, or designer, would not make an effort to publish his work, if the creator would not be compensated accordingly. Protection of creations yields profit, and the profit motivates the creators to create more for the benefit of all.

Third reason – development.

It is important to understand that the development of any invention involves high investments, and therefore the protection of intellectual property is an incentive to invest resources in the development of the inventions. For example: In the pharmaceutical industry, no investor will choose to invest his money if he cannot see the potential return on his investment.

Fourth reason – the benefit of all.

As the work is published and become accessible to the general public, more and more people will feel free to publish and share their works. That is, the more people publish, the more people will be able to be inspired by their creations and create more new creations of their own and so on. The protection creates openness and allows sharing and growth. The industry is constantly being developed based on what is created, published and learned.
